Tools I Use When Designing Websites
When I got my start in web design, the online tools were nowhere near as powerful as the ones that can be found today. The net is ripe with a number of amazing web apps and tools that I never thought would be possible twenty years ago. Those resources greatly enhanced my ability to deliver a heavily optimized and visually dynamic website.
Below is a list of the tools that I utilized when making this website as of 2022:
Websites
- GitHub – Source repository of this theme that makes distributing this theme a piece of cake
- CodePen – Good source for code samples
- Gradient Magic – a fabulous tool for generating CSS gradients
- Pattern Monster – a simple, easy-to-use pattern generator
- Favicon Generator – Automates the process of generating various favicons and app icons
- Animista – Useful for visualizing CSS animation
- Tables Generator – The quick and dirty way to build an HTML table
- CSS Code Generator – Useful for generating drop shadows, gradients, etc
- W3Schools – All-around good info on all aspects of web design and more
- CSS-Tricks – Good information on newer web design tips and tricks
Apps
- ImageOptim – An easy-to-use app for optimizing virtually any image type
- VS Code – A nice code-authoring app
- Squoosh – Great for converting and compressing images
- SVGOMG – an essential tool for optimizing SVG files for web use
- Icomoon – A well-known and versatile tool for generating icon fonts
- Inkscape – Another popular free vector design app
- GIMP – A classic free alternative to Photoshop
…And that should just about cover everything that I typically use when developing a website.
